9:30 – 11 am • “Commissioning: The Total Process” presented by Gerald Kettler, P.E., CCP, LEEP AP • 1.5 GBCI and AIA credits pending • Room C-150
As building systems have become increasing sophisticated and promised higher efficiencies, system performance has come under increasing scrutiny especially when projections are not attained. Building Commissioning was developed in response to these concerns. This process helps to integrate and organize the design, construction, operations, and maintenance of a building’s systems to ensure healthy, comfortable, and efficient facility operation.
The presentation covers the entire Commissioning process and how it applies to LEED and other sustainability rating systems for all project types.

10 – 10:50 am • “Stabilization of Glass Facades After Hurricanes and Tornadoes” presented by Joseph Solinski • Room C-145
When a tornado or hurricane descends upon a downtown area, the exposure and impact to high-rise buildings can be sever. The extreme winds, wind pressures, and windborn debris generated by these types of storms impose loads and impacts on building surfaces that can lead to total failure of the building. Two case studies of wind storm disasters will be profiled regarding the securing and stabilization of the exterior glass curtain walls (March 2000 Fort worth Category F2 Tornado and September 2008 Hurricane Ike, Category 2 at landfall). The focus will be on the assembly of a team involving property management, restoration contractors, consultants and insurance companies, and how assessment of the exterior wall damage was performed and documented, as well as how the stabilization process was developed and managed to ensure the safety of the public and pedestrians around the properties.

It’s always a good idea to make sure your construction contracts are up-to-date. New court decisions and changes in the law can impact whether your contract forms will stand up in the event of a problem – or whether they expose you to greater liability than you realized. This past year, in particular, saw major changes from the state legislature that will affect how the construction industry contracts for work and allocates risk. In this program, Peter Martin will point out the top ten things you need to know about your contract forms this year.
